Call to Action: Ghost-Kananaskis Sub-regional Planning Phase 1 Engagement
June 1, 2026
The Government of Alberta is seeking input for the Ghost-Kananaskis Sub-regional planning area; this is the first phase of a two-phase engagement process. They have identified planning as a priority and are quickly moving forward with sub-regional plans across the province as a key component to the management of crown lands.
The province has stated that the purpose of the sub-regional plans is to provide direction for the management of a particular area to support regulatory certainty and policy direction.
We have provided an engagement guide that contains responses to the survey questions put forward by the planning team with the Government of Alberta. The Alberta Wilderness Association (AWA) believes the Ghost-Kananaskis Sub-regional Plan should be centered around headwaters protection as the primary objective. Additional objectives include preservation of biodiversity and support of low-impact, sustainable, and responsible land-use that shows ecological integrity and reflects the values of local Indigenous groups, communities, land-users, and stakeholders.
Below is the engagement guide, where AWA’s overview of the survey questions are provided. You are welcome to take inspiration from “our take” but we do encourage you to make your responses your own!

The current engagement opportunity focuses on providing feedback on two components: the Draft Vision, and the Draft Outcomes, both of which are found within the Government of Alberta’s accompanying document. Engagement is asked to be submitted by Friday, Jun. 5, 2026. This is Phase 1 of 2 — additional feedback can be emailed to ghost-kananaskis-srp@gov.ab.ca.
