Alberta Wilderness Association celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2025. In discussions around our legacy, we decided to establish an annual scholarship of $5,000 for undergraduates in an environmental program.
Applicant Requirements
Undergraduate student undertaking a degree in Environmental Studies, or similar program.
Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident.
Alberta resident, attending any university in Canada.
Application Procedure
Submit the following documents to Alberta Wilderness Association:
Submit your university acceptance letter or current transcripts.
Resume and cover letter explaining how your academic program fits into the environmental sector, and your post-graduate goals.
Application Deadline
Applications open May 1 and close June 15 of each year. Email awaed@abwild.ca with reference “Environmental Scholarship.”
Please note that by applying, the winner grants consent to have their name published by AWA on our social media, in our Wild Lands Advocate, and our annual report.
The winner will be selected by committee and advised in August.
2026
Courtlynd Cherpin is our 2026 recipient. She is a fifth-year Biological Sciences and Science Education student at the University of Lethbridge. Her experiences studying Alberta’s biodiversity through field research and sharing science through education have shaped her belief that conservation depends not only on good research, but also on helping people understand and come to value the natural world. She hopes to pursue graduate studies in ecology and build a career dedicated to protecting biodiversity through both research and public engagement.
2025
Norbert Nguyen is our 2025 recipient. Norbert is a fourth-year Bachelor of Science student at the University of Alberta in the conservation biology program. He is now the first-ever AWA scholarship recipient.
