As AWA celebrated our 60th anniversary in 2025, we invited people across the province to ask themselves “What’s Your 60?” More than 60 people chose a challenge that connected them with Wild Alberta and raised more than $35,000 for conservation. Thank you to everyone who participated or donated!

“I needed to adjust my goal due to a health issue. My goal went from getting out into city parks 60 times, to enjoying the outdoors anyway I possibly could 60 times. Sometimes that meant sitting on my balcony and enjoying the robin fledglings or admiring the flowering lilac bush in the courtyard of my condo.

For the first time in 17 years since I have lived here, I watched how my courtyard shifted from spring to summer and now to fall. I was able to take in the details. I didn’t know we had house finches in my courtyard! They would sing to me each morning while I recovered from surgery. They were a bright light and song for me each day. “

“Another new park with a cool history. Without this challenge I never would have said “Hey, let’s walk around Ranchlands.”

“I continue to be in awe of how many different flowers are out there. Ones that I didn’t pay much attention to have me enthralled.”

-Kelsie Joad (60 Calgary Parks and 60 wildflowers)

“Opportunities come into your life for a reason. Sharing in and being a part of this journey got me through a really tough season. Nature always does. I walk out of this being reminded that our wilderness isn’t just something that should be adventured on and used as a commodity for our pleasure.

It is a place and space that not only deserves our protection but requires it!!! We are the keepers of this incredible land. For every kilometre hiked, rowed, skied…we need to also put in some time for community and conservation.”

-Amanda Konnik (Visit 60 Alberta lakes, hike solo 60 km)

Some of the other imaginative challenges participants created:

Donate 60 times to charity

Ski 60 km

Write 60 nature haikus

Swim in 60 Alberta bodies of water

Finn spent 60 nights in a tent – and some of them were darn chilly!

“Curiosity led me to learn that urban wilderness means natural or semi-natural spaces within cities — places where nature and people coexist, shaped more by time than by design. These wild corners can be parks, forests, or forgotten lots reclaimed by green life.”

-Shawna Rogers (60 Adventure Labs)

“I have really enjoyed getting peripherally connected to AWA as an org and other conservation supporters through this campaign. It was so refreshing and fortifying to read about people who love, care for and fight for our special wild places. “

-Chelsea Sherbut (Donate 60 times to charity)
