Response from Taber Council on grasslands protection

We received a response to our joint letter asking for greater protection on municipal grasslands, sent to the MD of Taber Council by Alberta Wilderness Association (AWA), Alberta Native Plant Council (ANPC), Southern Alberta Group for the Environment (SAGE), Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) and Nature Alberta on August 5, 2026.

The response acknowledges the recommendations in the letter have been reviewed, although provides no promises that actions will be taken or that additional protections will be applied to the vulnerable grasslands.

Re: Protection of Native Prairie in the Municipal District of Taber

Thank you for your correspondence dated August 5, 2026, regarding the protection of native prairie and grasslands on tax recovery lands within the Municipal District of Taber. Council appreciates the time and effort your organizations have invested in preparing and submitting your recommendations concerning the preservation and stewardship of these lands.

Council values the perspectives regarding the ecological, agricultural, and community importance of native prairie grasslands. The recommendations contained in your submission have been received and reviewed by Council.

Council remains committed to exploring opportunities for grassland preservation within the Municipal District of Taber. This work will continue in collaboration with community grazing associations and interested lease holders to evaluate approaches that balance environmental stewardship, agricultural sustainability, and local community interests.
