It was cool and blustery, with a sprinkling of rain as we headed up the trail in Brown-Lowry Provincial Park. Our feet squelched through the mud on the trail. But our mindfulness facilitator, Dr. Rachel Martin, encouraged us not to judge and deem the weather “bad”. Instead to just notice the things that were around us, and maybe hold the ones that gave us joy – like the sound of our feet squishing in the mud, or the smell of the rain-soaked vegetation.
The sun came out for a glorious view at the lookout and we took our time at the top. We participated in a number of mindfulness exercises along the way, including REALLY taking a long time to look at and get to know one specific tree, without judgement, just describing details. As we drove away at the trailhead we had a number of great ideas of how we could bring more mindfulness into our everyday lives, as well as how important nature is for mental well-being.
