This hike was evidence of why the “Trailhead Rule,” as I call it, is a great idea. The Trailhead Rule states that, no matter the weather, show up at the trailhead and you can decide whether or not you want to hike when you get there. I think a number of participants who cancelled must have been scared away by the rain and dark clouds in Calgary, but in Diamond Valley and in the High Noon Hills the sun was shining and the wind was reasonably calm. The flowers were abundant, and the views towards the snow-capped mountains were exceptional as we reached the hilltop for golden hour, when the light is warm and the backlit wildflowers seem to glow from the inside. There were pussy toes, lupine, geranium, biscuitroot, shooting star and plenty of others to take in, along with the calls of juncos and other birds. There were also a couple of great grey owls on fence posts on the drive home!
