Adventure For Wilderness – Whaleback Wildflower Wander
with Kevin Van Tighem
June 14, 2026
Bob Creek Wildland Provincial Park
9a.m. – 4 p.m. (approximate end time)
Difficulty: Moderate to challenging, 16 km with rough terrain travel and small stream crossings
Join naturalist and author Kevin Van Tighem for a full-day hike into a foothills wilderness where an isolated population of blue and white camas flowers usually bloom in mid June. Even if the camas are not at their prime, the countryside will be green and rife with wildflowers and songbirds. The terrain is fairly gentle with no significant hills, but there will be wetland edges and small streams to cross. Bring good footwear, bear spray, water (there are no potable springs) and a lunch. Be prepared for wind and changeable weather. Walking poles could prove helpful, and of course there will be mosquitoes. It’s recommended that you have dry socks and a change of footwear waiting at your vehicle for your return.
Kevin Van Tighem, a former superintendent of Banff National Park, has written more than 200 articles, stories, and essays on conservation and wildlife which have garnered him many awards, including Western Magazine Awards, Outdoor Writers of Canada book and magazine awards, and the Journey Award for Fiction. His most recent book is Understory: An ecologist’s memoir of loss and hope.
