Adventure for Wilderness – Bunchberry Birds and Butterflies

with Nick Carter

July 4, 2026
Bunchberry Meadows, Southwest of Edmonton, AB
(meeting details will be emailed to participants a few days before the event)
10:00 a.m.
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate; ~7km. Dirt and boardwalk trails with easy to moderate terrain including small hills and shallow inclines, and some hummocky and rooted trail sections.

Located southwest of Edmonton, Bunchberry Meadows is a well-loved natural area co-managed by the Nature Conservancy of Canada and Edmonton & Area Land Trust. Containing a variety of habitat types including sandy pine uplands, aspen woods, grassy fields, and tamarack wetlands, this property hosts a wonderful diversity of living things.

Early summer is the best time of year for butterflies, and on this walk we’ll see how many we can find. The landscape diversity at Bunchberry Meadows supports a great diversity of species, from cryptic forest specialists like satyrs and arctics to the colourful fritillaries and skippers that flutter around the shrubby meadows. On the way we’ll also keep an eye out for any other interesting bugs as well as local bird species, which range from wrens, sparrows, and woodpeckers in the forests to hawks and vultures that soar overhead. We’ll also investigate the local landscape geology and learn more about what makes this property so interesting all around.

Make sure to bring: Sturdy walking shoes, weather-appropriate clothing (hat, outerwear, etc.), water bottle, and binoculars and camera (recommended).
