Nature in the Beaverhills Biosphere – October 19, 2025

October 19, 2025

It was a cool and drizzly day, but a group of keen adventurers and AWA supporters joined Geoff Holroyd and Nick Carter for a morning exploring the Cooking Lake – Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area. It is part of the Beaver Hills, which was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2016. We learned about the unique geography of the region, as well as its importance as wildlife habitat. We were on the lookout for signs of animals, such as woodpecker and beaver that live in the area. Because it was a very dry year, the beaver ponds were almost dried up, and we got a look into how the beaver expands wetlands with channels away from the main pond.
