Every year we welcome Susan Holroyd from the Alberta Community Bat Program to share her incredible knowledge with AWA supporters and this year the demand was so great we ended up having two days of bat adventures! The evening started before sunset, where we learned about the importance of bats, the threats they are facing, including white-nose syndrome and wind turbines, and what we can do to help. Did you know that we have nine species of bats in Alberta? The weather ended up being great for both nights, despite thunderstorms having rolled through in the early evening on Thursday.
As the sun was setting we strolled down the hill to the reservoir, where we were entertained by the resident beavers and ducks until the sky became dark enough for the bats to arrive. With our bat detectors in hand we heard and saw numerous bats flying low over the water of the reservoir. Many were the little brown mytosis, but we also detected other species such as the hoary bat.
