AWA’s Concerns on the Draft Co-operation Agreement between Alberta and Canada

March 12, 2026

On March 12, AWA sent a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney and Terence Hubbard, President of the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada, detailing our concerns about the Draft Co-operation Agreement on Environmental and Impact Assessment between Alberta and Canada, currently open for public comment until March 27, 2026.

AWA emphasized that the Draft Co-operation Agreement cannot be published as written. The oversight provided by the federal government is necessary to ensure that decisions made in Alberta are not just in the best interest of decision-makers in the province, but for all Canadians.

AWA urges the federal government not to fetter its jurisdiction in Alberta, nor defer to the provincial processes as appropriate substitutes for federal assessments.
