AWA comments on the draft Recovery Strategy for the Mountain Sucker, Milk River populations

February 3, 2026

On February 2, 2026, AWA provided comments to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada on the proposed Recovery Strategy for the Mountain Sucker (Catostomus platyrhynchus), Milk River populations, in Canada.

The Mountain Sucker, also known as the Plains Sucker, is a small native fish facing declines due to climate change, dams and water management and use, agricultural and forestry effluents, invasive species and diseases, linear disturbances, and other habitat disturbances.

AWA supports the recovery plan overall and has highlighted where it could be strengthened. Our full letter can be found here: AWA Comments on the Mountain Sucker, Milk River Populations, Recovery Strategy
