AWA Comments on the Listing of Plains Sucker to SARA

July 5, 2025

AWA supports greater protection for Alberta’s tributaries and the native freshwater fish and other species that rely on them, including Plains Sucker.

In July 2025, AWA provided comments for the proposed listing of Plains Sucker (Pantosteus jordani), Saskatchewan Nelson-population, to Schedule 1, the list of wildlife species at risk, under the Species at Risk Act. Given the cumulative and continuing threats to Plains Sucker habitat, and the presumption that populations are already or will soon be declining in the province, AWA agrees with the addition of this species to Canada’s list of wildlife species at risk as “Special Concern.”
