“A library is a great place for everyone, but it becomes an exceptional place if you know how to read.”
This is how our adventure coordinator Joseph Litke explained walking through the woods as a tracker. Once you know how to read the signs that animals leave behind, a whole new world is opened up and even a simple wander through your local woods can hold many stories of the creatures that have passed through. Though much of the recent April dump of snow had melted, there was still enough to find tracks from coyotes and squirrels. The mud held some faint moose tracks…as well as other moose leavings!
While the day started off cool at the Smith Blackburn Homestead (a property owned by the Edmonton and Area Land Trust), the sun warmed us soon enough. While we may not have seen any animals, we know that they have been near and know this spot is habitat for moose, deer, nesting robins, various species of woodpecker, coyote and beaver. All from the tracks and sign they left behind! Everyone learned something new and went home with a better understanding of the natural world around us.
